What is poker

Badugi, is the Asian variant of poker that has been gaining significant popularity among the card playing enthusiasts in the past few years. Badugi is usually reported to have come from Korea but there are also accounts of its Chinese origin. It is offered in many poker online sites as well as in big casinos. With its present status, there is no doubt that Badugi has ‘arrived” in the gambling scene. In Badugi, a hand is made up of four cards, where a player has three chances to draw or change the combination, to attain the lowest hand possible and win the pot.

A badugi is a hand made up of a combination four of cards of different suits and values. Since Badugi is a lowball game, the best badugi is the combination of the ace of club (AC), 2hearts(2H), 3spade(3S) and 4diamond(4D). The ace has a low value in Badugi and again, the lower the hand score, the better. To cite an example: AC 8D 3H 6S wins over 2C 9D 4H 7S, another badugi.

A player is not always lucky to have a badugi and there are other hand combinations like the:

  1. 3-card hand where two cards either have the same value or the same suit. If a hand has the same numbers as the cards, say A, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 for example, then the second card is called the “kicker”. This example: AC 8D 3H 6S, falls in this category.
  2. 2-card hand where there are three cards of the same numbers or same suit. Example: 2H, 5S, 8S, 10S. Again, the second card is called the kicker.
  3. 1-card hand where the cards are of different values or different suits. Cards: 6S, 6D, 6S, 6S, 6D, 6S. The highest score is the winner.

Kicker

The kicker is the card that connects the two hands. The two hands are usually separated by a score line. If the two hands are the same, say A,A and 5S, 5S beats A,A. However, if the two hands are the same, say AS, AS and 5S, 5S beats AS, AS. Now the question: what happens if the kicker of the two-hand is the same? The answer: a split. Two cards are usually placed underneath the “pokerace99” for the two hands. This results in two hands, with two different scores. The kicker of the higher hand is usually placed in the lower hand. For example: 6S, 6D, 6S, 6D, 5S beats 5S, 5D, 5S, 6S, 6D.

Implying a Bigger Stake

By applying the above explanations, you should be able to work out very quickly, what hands beat what. You will not find a definitive answer, as nobody has the final say on this. But you can observe that the likes of AS, AS, 5S, 5D and 5S are the usual favorites. When you are trying out new strategies, it is best to start with the favorites. It may take some time, but you will get very good at this. By being selective, you will narrow down your choices and arms you become very good in betting and gambling. Finally, if you are making a budget for betting, do not work with more than 5% of your budget. 5%, 10%, 25% and the like – it’s no problem if these are the only the budget you can afford, but with very low discipline you will be cutting corners and may end up with a losing streak. Start with a very small sum of money and work with it cautiously, if you win significantly more money than you have spent you have achieved your budget objective. If you lose, you may still be debts and you will not have made any further in your betting.

Bad news get in the brush

If the subject of losing streaks in betting turns you off, do not worry, it is not your fault. In fact, a good strategy and good sense of self-control can distance you from such thought.
